The Women's Premier League (WPL) is a women's T20 cricket premier league held in India. It is owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament format being double-round robin and playoffs. The first season being held in Mumbai, Maharashtra in March'23.

HISTORY:-

The first major women's T20 championship in India was the Women's T20 Challenge. This started as a single-match tournament in 2018, and was expanded to a three-team, three-match competition held in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

In February 2022,The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced plans to establish a women's version of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the major men's T20 Cricket League in India, replacing the Women's T20 Challenge. By August plans were made and in October the BCCI announced that they were considering a five-team tournament which would take place in March 2023. This league was informally known as the Women's Indian Premier League, lately named the Women's Premier League by BCCI.

On 28 January 2023, the BCCI invited bids for the league's title sponsorship rights until 2027. Mumbai Indians were the inaugural winners of the tournament, beating Delhi Capitals in the final. Later it was conducted sucessfully under the influence of new President of BCCI [Mr. Roger Binny].

BROADCAST:-

In January 2023, Viacom18, announced it had got the global media rights for TV and digital broadcasts for the tournament. The contract will run for five years. The initial season of the league was broadcasted in India on the Sports18 TV channel and the JioCinema app, both of which are owned by Viacom18.

The first season of the competition was broadcast in the United Kingdom on Sky Sports, in Australia by Fox Sports Australia, in the United States and Canada by Willow TV and in South Africa by SuperSports.

[  ] Each team can have a total of 5 Overseas player in their playing XI of whom one should be from an associate nation.

[  ] The format for the Women's Premier League is slightly different from that of Indian Premier League[IPL]. A total of five teams are participating in this league. The team at the top of the points table will qualify directly for the final. On the other hand, the teams in the second and third place will have to play a match to go to the finals. The team which will secure the fourth and fifth position on the league points table will be out of the tournament

[  ] It is for the first time that three of India's biggest industrialists have invested money in the same tournament. The Adani Sports Line has bought a team of Gujarat Giants in this league. Mukesh Ambani's team Mumbai Indians is also participating in this league. Ratan Tata's Tata Group is the title sponsor of this tournament.

[ ] Each team had a budget of INR 12 crore to assemble a WPL 2023 squad of 15-18 players including a maximum of 6 overseas cricketers.

[ ] The BCCI revealed that Adani Sportsline, the sports arm of Adani Group, bought the most expensive team in the WPL. They shelled out ₹1289 crore to pick the Ahmedabad franchise.
